Kristen's Law does not make any sense

When Kristen Bowen was hit by a freight train on Feb. 8, the ralroad did nothing wrong, the girl died because of her own stupidity. Now they have named a law after her to honor her stupidity. This law does not make any sense. It will require railroad to put up a 6-foot high concrete fence along their right of way. If this girl had been jaywalking and got hit by a car, would Villa Park put up a 6-foot fence so no one else could cross the street and get hig by a car? Of course not. So why pick on the railroad because of this girl's stupidity?

IN RESPONSE TO RICHARD JAMES SANDERS ELMHURST "YOUR OPINION"
VILLA PARK ARGUS WEDNESDAY MAY 31 EDITION

Completely respect Mr. Richard James Sanders (Elmhurst, IL) rights to his own opinion. Supporters for "Kristens Law" however hold a higher regard for human life. If a child jaywalking were to be killed we anticipate ANY village would take the necessary steps to see that it would not happen again. Whether it be a fence, putting in a crosswalk, a stop sign, pedestrian warning sign, or simply enforcing the jaywalking laws in that specific location. In this instance Kristen was attempting to cross over to North Terrace Park via an unprotected area of railroad tracks that has taken other lives prior to her death. We need to recognize Parks, schools and other institutions along the tracks that attract children as high risk areas and make them safe regardless of cost or inconvenience. We cannot hold a child responsible for an error in judgment especially when that child pays the ultimate price. It is up to us as adults to provide the safest possible environment for our kids. We need to do a better job. We need to locate these high risk areas before loss of life occurs.
