DANVILLE – A 67-year-old Danville
man was struck and killed by a Norfolk & Southern train at around 8:30 p.m.
Monday.
Witnesses said the man, identified
as Curtis J. Bass, was trying to cross the tracks just east of Washington
Street on Main Street. The man had been walking west on Main, according to
Larry Thomason, Danville director of public safety.
The 65-car southbound train was
sounding its horn, according to witnesses, Thomason added.
Vermilion County Coroner Peggy
Johnson released the identity at midmorning. She said an autopsy was scheduled
for today.
"Whether he didn't hear the
horn or what, we don't know at this time," Thomason said.
The Danville Police Department and Vermilion County coroner are continuing to investigate the accident. No further information was being released early Tuesday morning.
